If you’re here, you’ve accomplished something significant: a full manuscript is sitting on your computer, awaiting the next step. You want to ensure your writing is the best it can be before it’s published, and that means professional editing.
If you’re a novelist, please check out my fiction services. Fiction and nonfiction editing have a lot in common—and one novelist even hired me because of my nonfiction experience. But they do differ in a few key ways, and I’ve tailored my services accordingly.
The editing I provide for nonfiction books can be roughly divided into four categories: developmental editing, substantive editing (which overlaps with “developmental”), copyediting, and proofreading. I also provide a comprehensive edit, which combines substantive editing and copyediting. If you would like to discuss shorter or unconventional editing projects with me, let’s talk!
No matter which editing service you need, I will help you
- communicate your message effectively
- meet professional standards of structure and style
- tell your story as only you can
What I will not do:
- judge you for your grammar errors
- override your voice with my own
- apply one-style-fits-all editing
I’m in this job because everyone has a message worth sharing—and I have the skills to help. Since I care about your audience as much as you do, I’ll hold you accountable to style conventions and writing best practices. Since I care about you, your message, and your voice, I’ll also provide encouragement, education, and flexible suggestions where applicable.
My default style guide is The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th ed. This is the most widely used style in American book publishing.
